Dojo Etiquette

Etiquette is a code of behaviour that must be obeyed under all circumstances. It is just as important for high graded students as it is for low graded students to obey. Etiquette is used to show respect to the club, instructors, students, and Karate-Do. Etiquette makes us aware of what is going on around us as well as reminding us of our responsibility in being part of Karate-Do. Etiquette in its simplist form, a common courtesy - a basic feature of life which is noticeably missing from society today. If you are unsure about any dojo etiquette please ask a senior member of the dojo.

Gichin Funakoshi

Gichin Funakoshi was born in Shuri, Okinawa in 1868. As a boy, he was trained by two famous masters of that time. Each trained him in a different Okinawan martial art. From Yasutsune Azato he learned Shuri-te. From Yasutsune Itosu, he learned Naha-te. It would be the melding of these two styles that would one day become Shotokan karate. Funakoshi-sensei is the man who introduced karate to Japan.
